Dance – Liberal Arts
The Dance degree program prepares students for transfer as dance majors to four-year institutions, promoting a mastery and awareness of the craft of dance arts in theory and practice.
Students are required to engage in the study of technique, improvisation, composition, production and criticism, and must complete a minimum of four college-level courses (DAN 131, DAN 132, DAN 148, DAN 201, DAN 202).
Graduates of the program will be able to:
- Demonstrate knowledge of and proficiency in the art of dance technique and performance.
- Choreograph dances demonstrating the concepts of abstraction and narrative with coherence.
- Establish a critical understanding of the development of dance based on historical significance, craftsmanship and cultural content.
- Execute the basic principles of dance technique with awareness of proper anatomical alignment and injury prevention.
- Critically analyze and discuss key aesthetic principles of dance performance and choreography.
- Investigate careers in performance, dance education and movement arts.
- Define both orally and written, the correct vocabulary used in various dance disciplines.
- Identify key figures in dance and summarize their contribution to the art form.
Prerequisites
Algebra I is a prerequisite for all majors. Competency in Algebra I may be verified with a passing score on the College’s placement test or by completion of the appropriate course. Students must also have a grade of “C” or better in one year of high school laboratory science.
